2. How Do I Qualify for Admission to Low-Income Public Housing?
You must first complete an application and submit all required documentation to Monroe Housing Commission. Once your application is processed and accepted, it will be placed on a waiting list.
Required documentation includes Social Security cards and birth certificates for each person listed on the application, as well as current photo identification and income verification for each adult household member age 18 or older.
Each household member must have U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status. Each adult must pass applicable criminal and credit background checks. Income and assets for each household member must also be verified, and household income must fall within the income limits established by HUD.
All requested documentation must be submitted. Incomplete applications will be considered incomplete, and Monroe Housing Commission does not contact applicants to notify them of missing documentation.
3. How Long Will I Need to Wait Before I Am Approved for Housing?
Monroe Housing Commission cannot determine how long an individual or family will remain on the waiting list before an offer of housing is made.
When an application reaches the top of the waiting list, the individual or family will be invited to meet with an occupancy specialist or property manager to determine whether admission qualifications are met.
If those qualifications are met and housing appropriate for the individual or family’s needs is available, an offer may be made.
Applicants who accept a housing offer must sign a lease and pay the applicable rent and security deposit. If an applicant refuses two offers of housing, the application will be withdrawn from the waiting list and the applicant will need to reapply.
4. How Do I Find the Status of My Application?
Contact the Monroe Housing Commission management office to request an update regarding the status of your application.
Applicants are responsible for keeping their information current throughout the waiting-list process.
5. How Do I Update My Information?
Rent is based on 30 percent of a resident’s annual adjusted gross income.
Please contact the Monroe Housing Commission Business Office for additional information regarding how rent is calculated.
6. How Is My Rent Determined?
Contact the Monroe Housing Commission management office whenever there is a change to your:
- Home address
- Mailing address
- Phone number
- Email address
- Household income
- Household or family size
Keeping this information current is extremely important. Changes in household size may affect the type or bedroom size of housing for which your household qualifies.
Failure to keep your information current could also prevent Monroe Housing Commission from reaching you regarding your application. Applicants may potentially be skipped or removed from the waiting list if current contact information is not provided.
